Natural Hair Myths Busted: I Don’t Wash My Hair Daily *GASP*

Helloo my little munchkins,

I got the inspiration for this post whilst talking to some of my cheer friends (you know who you are). My cheer team is composed of a lot of people with a lot of different backgrounds and so we all have different opinions on various things. So we were on our way to a competition, when we started talking about hair (who would have guessed?). The general gist of it was wash day; the frequency, what products we used and how long it took.

My hair was out in a puff at the time and I explained that due to the kinky and dry nature of my hair, in winter I didn’t wash my hair more than once a week, even if I sweated more than usual that week. See some people just wash their hair everyday, and they forget that the main reason for washing so often is to get rid of excess grease in their hair. There is hardly enough oil produced in my scalp to run down the length of my hair, so it’s practically suicidal to wash it off daily.

Another thing is the products I use. Usually when I ‘wash’ my hair i’ll either just use a ‘normal conditioner’ or a ‘cleansing conditioner’. Using shampoo is a big no-no for me. Sulphates dry out my hair and strip it of the little precious oils I have. I would only use a sulphate-free shampoo, and even then, at most I would use one once a month. To be honest unless you’re a professional mud wrestler your hair doesn’t actually get that dirty, so why use drying shampoo and strip your hair only to incompletely replace the moisture with conditioner. Another point that most people don’t know is, if your hair is dry, your scalp will produce even more oil to prevent damage. So its just a vicious circle that could be amended simply by washing your hair less, using a milder shampoo or no shampoo at all.

The last thing we discussed was how long it took, a simple wash day for me is about 4-10 hours, depending on de-tangling time, whether i’m deep conditioning, and the styling afterwards. Definitely something I can’t afford to do every day, or even every other day. That’s another factor that affects the frequency of my washes, usually i go for a wait time of 10-14 days, but if i’ve had a heavy cheer session, or in the run up to competition (which is brutal by the way) i’ll increase it to weekly washing.

So there you have it, a short break down of my hair washing curriculum.

PS Well done to my cheer team (Queen Mary Angels-Reign) who competed in the university world championships this weekend and are now rated 5th in the world! I’m so proud πŸ˜€ ❀

    1. Lol Caroline, I don’t judge πŸ˜‰ hahaha but what else would make your hair soo dirty that you absolutely need to wash it once/twice a day?

    1. I totally get you, sometimes it’s hard to put aside the necessary 4-12 hours for wash day, and the longer you leave it, the worse the detangling session. *sigh* I’m stivking to once a week too, especially in the heat i’m in.

I wanna hear what you think
